The Yamane technique is used to secure a displaced intraocular lens (IOL) and has been shown to be effective.
This patient below had a Yamane technique for a dsplaced sulcus IOL.
This is how he looked before the Yamane procedure.
He had a car accident about 1 month later where the air bags deployed and hit him in the right eye. This displaced his Yamane-secured IOL.
This is the first time I have seen a displaced Yamane-secured IOL. The patient noted a sudden decrease in vision right after the accident. The implant has been pushed back posteriorly as can be seen in the first photo below. The 2nd & 3rd photos were taken right after the Yamane-secured IOL procedure showing the IOL is not displaced. The inferior haptic is visible and has been displaced forward on the 5th photo.
Below is an OPTOS photo showing the curved part of the optic that has been displaced (1st image; image 2 & 3 are of the eye before the car accident and right after the Yamane-secured IOL procedure). The haptic (or arm of the IOL) looks to still be in the wall of the sclera.
The plan is to take him back to the operating room and reposition the IOL through the same Yamane wounds initially made.
