Do Floaters Increase After Cataract Surgery
Many patients report more floaters after Cataract Surgery. A friend from NY recently told me she was hesistant to have her second cataract surgery performed as the floaters that showed up after her first cataract surgery were a real concern.
Research shows there may be some reasons for the increased floaters patients notice after cataract surgery:
1. The cataract was blocking vision and vitreous changes and floaters were present prior to the cataract removal but became more noticeable after the cataract unblocked the light from entering the eye.
This is often true in patients with severe cataracts. The vitreous does change its consistency with aging.
2. The viscoelastic the surgeon chooses:

Punchline:
We try to tell every cataract patient after surgery: Any new floaters or flashes or dark curtain coming down over vision: need prompt eye evaluation.
